Hohensalzburg Fortress

Hohensalzburg Fortress was originally built in 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard of Salzburg during the Investiture Controversy, a bitter power struggle between the Pope and the Holy Roman Emperor. Over the following centuries, successive archbishops expanded and reinforced the fortress, transforming it from a simple wooden structure into the imposing stone stronghold that dominates Salzburg's skyline today. Remarkably, the fortress was never conquered by a foreign army, a testament to its formidable defensive design and strategic hilltop position. Its walls contain nearly a millennium of Austrian history, from medieval power struggles to the turbulence of the Peasants' War in the 16th century.

Inside the fortress, visitors can explore the lavishly decorated State Rooms, also known as the Princely Chambers, which served as the private quarters of Salzburg's powerful prince-archbishops. The Golden Hall features an ornate blue and gold coffered ceiling studded with gilded bosses, while the Golden Chamber is adorned with intricate Gothic wood carvings and a magnificent ceramic tile stove dating to 1501. The fortress also houses the Salzburg Bull, a 200-pipe barrel organ from the 16th century that still plays daily, its haunting tones echoing across the city below. A dedicated museum within the fortress walls displays medieval weapons, armor, instruments of torture, and artifacts that vividly illustrate life in a medieval stronghold.

The fortress is accessible either by a scenic funicular railway that departs from the Old Town or by a steep but rewarding footpath that winds up through ancient fortification walls. From the fortress ramparts, visitors are treated to spectacular unobstructed views stretching across Salzburg's baroque domes and spires, the winding Salzach River, and the majestic peaks of the Berchtesgaden Alps on the horizon. The panorama is especially dramatic at sunset, when the city below is bathed in warm golden light and the mountains turn shades of pink and purple. Many visitors consider this viewpoint the single best vantage point in all of Salzburg.

Chamber music performances held in the medieval State Rooms offer an intimate and acoustically superb setting that transports audiences back in time.
