History and Design
The Sea Garden was established in 1878 by Czech horticulturist Anton Novak, who transformed a barren stretch of coastline into a lush urban oasis spanning over 80 hectares. Its winding alleys, ornamental flowerbeds, and dense tree canopies were designed in the romantic landscape tradition, blending seamlessly with the natural contours of the Black Sea shore. Over the decades the park has expanded to include fountains, sculptures, and grand promenades that reflect the changing tastes of each era.
Cultural Attractions Within the Park
The Sea Garden is home to several of Varna's most important cultural institutions, including the Naval Museum, the Museum of Natural History, and the open-air Copernicus Astronomy Complex. The park's terraced open-air theatre has hosted concerts and festivals since the 1930s, serving as the main stage for the renowned Varna Summer International Music Festival. Sculptures and monuments are scattered throughout the grounds, turning a simple stroll into an open-air gallery of Bulgarian art and history.
Gardens, Zoo, and Recreation
Beyond its cultural landmarks, the park offers a small zoo, a dolphinarium, playgrounds, and a network of shaded cycling and walking paths that attract locals and visitors alike year-round. Carefully tended rose gardens and exotic plant collections provide bursts of colour from spring through autumn, while ancient oaks and plane trees offer welcome shade during the Black Sea summer heat. The terraced pathways descend through the greenery to the golden sands of Varna Beach, making the park a natural gateway between city and sea.
