Europe's Largest Natural Sandstone Arch
The centrepiece of Bohemian Switzerland National Park is Pravcicka Gate, the largest natural sandstone arch in Europe, standing 16 metres high with a span of nearly 27 metres. This extraordinary geological formation has been sculpted over millions of years by wind, water, and frost erosion, and it served as the backdrop for the 2005 film adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia. To protect the fragile structure, visitors can no longer walk across the arch itself, but a network of viewing platforms provides breathtaking perspectives of the gate framed against forested valleys below.
The Gorges and River Trails
One of the park's most memorable experiences is a boat ride through the Edmund Gorge and Wild Gorge, where a gondolier poles visitors along a narrow, mirror-still river flanked by towering sandstone cliffs draped in moss and ferns. The gorge trails connect to wider hiking routes that wind through dense pine forests, past hidden waterfalls, and along cliff-edge paths with sweeping views of the Elbe valley. Whether you choose a gentle river walk or a more challenging ridge hike, the landscape feels otherworldly, more akin to a fantasy novel than a Central European national park.
Flora, Fauna, and Conservation
Bohemian Switzerland is home to a rich tapestry of wildlife, including peregrine falcons, eagle owls, otters, and several species of rare salamander that thrive in the park's damp sandstone crevices. The park's forests range from ancient beech stands to fragrant conifer plantations, with the unique microclimate of the gorges supporting plant species typically found at much higher altitudes. Established as a national park in 2000, ongoing conservation efforts focus on rewilding formerly managed forests and restoring natural watercourses to protect this fragile sandstone ecosystem for future generations.
Getting There and Planning Your Visit
The park lies in the far northwest of the Czech Republic, roughly 120 kilometres from Prague, and is most easily accessed from the gateway town of Hrensko on the German border. Regular trains from Prague to Decin take about 90 minutes, with local buses completing the journey to Hrensko in another 20 minutes, making a day trip feasible though an overnight stay allows for a more relaxed exploration. The park is busiest from June through September, so visiting in May or October rewards travellers with quieter trails, atmospheric mists, and the vivid colours of spring wildflowers or autumn foliage.
